Tips for Creating a Healthy Home

Everyone would like to believe that their family is safe inside the walls of their home, a place where they are comfortably protected from potential health risks! However, are you aware that the cause of asthma, lead poisoning, and several forms of chronic health issues could lie within the walls of your home?

What many people don’t realize is that all members in your family, particularly your children are vulnerable to major health threats if the design, construction and upkeep of your home isn’t done correctly.

In my profession I look at many homes each year all across our country. I work as a real estate investor and purchase many homes through foreclosures, short sales and through investing in tax liens and tax deeds at county held tax sales. Many of the homes I invest in need a decent amount of work to create a healthy living environment. Its unfortunate the number of homes I see where the prior home owners were unknowingly living in a virtual heath hazard.

If you’re thinking about building a new home or even a home renovation make certain that the contractor or architect you select employs healthy home building strategies and technologies. This will make certain that your loved ones are living in a healthy and safe home.

You need to realize that you may incur higher costs when building a healthy and eco friendly home in comparison to a typical home, however, the health and welfare of your family needs to be of utmost importance. So as you plan your next project consider the following points to ensure a safe and healthy home.

  • Make it a point to use nontoxic or less toxic constructing materials. Although these materials tend to be a little more costly than general building materials your families health is worth the cost.
  • Standard construction materials (specifically glues, paints, varnishes, insulators, etc.) are often full of toxic, volatile substances (VOCs) for example urea, formaldehyde, lead, asbestos, carbon monoxide, etc. derived from petroleum. If inhaled on a regular basis, these poisons can build up in your body leading to significant health issues.
  • Whether you’re building cabinets or countertops or selecting floor sheeting, sub-flooring or roof decking your best option is solid wood. However, if wood is too pricey, consider exterior grade plywood rather than particleboard or fiberboard since these materials contain toxic glues that are combined with wood chips.
  • Refrain from using vinyl flooring and wall-to-wall carpeting. Vinyl flooring contains poly vinyl chloride (PVC) a harmful substance and carpeted flooring collect dirt, dust mites, molds, etc. which are causative agents for allergies, asthma along with other chronic respiratory issues. As an alternative, use healthier flooring options. Consider alternatives such as cork, wood, ceramic tiles or bamboo.
  • Always utilize low-odor, nontoxic paints containing reduced levels of VOCs for instance, paints containing only clay and pigments.
  • Stay away from resins and glues which contain formaldehyde, specifically urea formaldehyde.
  • Refrain from building living areas above the garage space in your home. Toxic fumes can escape from the gas tank of your car and enter into the living area.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors specifically close to furnaces, fireplaces, and garage areas within your home. Radon testers should be used in the basement of your home since Radon is a dangerous radioactive gas that develops in the soil and can leak into your house through the foundation.

This isn’t an all inclusive list but it does cover some of the major projects performed in many homes. Fortunately, many newer homes being built today employ safer and healthier building practices.

For example, through tax deed investing I recently acquire a coastal property at one of Georgia’s monthly tax deed sales. The property is located close to Savannah in a quaint beach community called Tybee Island which is one of Georgia’s barrier islands. The property is a beach front condo that is only a few years old and the builder utilized all of the healthy, eco friendly practices I’ve discussed. The condo has ceramic tiles throughout, granite countertops, and solid wood cabinets. In addition, the paints and stains are all non toxic and carbon monoxide detectors were installed in the unit.

As you can see, it isn’t rocket science to create a healthy home environment; it only requires a little research and preparation.

Your Home May Be a Hazard To Your Health

In today’s world many individuals are making great strides in living a healthier lifestyle. We are taking precautions and making preventative yearly visit to our doctors, eating healthy and exercising more.

In fact, there are more people each day that are getting out of their chairs and away from the front of the TV and heading to the gym. A friend of mine works at a local fitness center and their membership has grown by more than 200% in the past year. With all the new members they had to expand their gym and add additional staff. In addition to the personal trainers, they had to hire a nutrition consultant to handle the questions and interests about training supplements, vitamins and other nutritional concerns of their members.

It great to see the renewed interest in maintaining a healthy lifestyle by so many people however, most people don’t realize that even though they’re receiving a great benefit from exercise and proper nutrition, their home may be robbing them of their health.

The majority of individuals consider our homes as our fortress, secure destinations to go in order to escape the assault of modern day life. Typically this is true. However, we have an invisible danger hiding in the apparently serene and protective boundaries of our homes, and it’s something we need to sit up and recognize. That invisible threat may be the poor quality of indoor air in our homes.

The process of breathing is so normal we don’t even notice we’re doing it, but think about the air that people ingest whenever we inhale? When was the last time you stopped to consider the standard of the air you’re taking into your lungs, and transferring into the cells within your body?

If you were sitting on some polluted spot on a busy town sidewalk, you may have stopped to wonder about what types of grime and dust was entering into your body. However, for the majority of us, particularly when we’re inside our own homes, the quality of the air we’re breathing isn’t a huge concern or not a concern at all.

The truth is the quality of air inside your home (even in apparently clean homes) can in fact be far worse than that of the largest, most industrialized, and dirtiest metropolitan centers! To put it plainly, the air in your house could be even worse for your health than the air you breathe strolling around New York City or San Francisco.

What causes this potentially dangerous indoor pollution? To begin with, the indoor use of chemicals like cleaning fluids, cigarettes or cigars, stains and paints, coal, furniture polish, asbestos, room heaters, and many others, can produce a build-up of dangerous particles. The level of severity usually depends upon whether or not there’s sufficient ventilation and how much outside air can get into the home, and vice versa. A house with inadequate ventilation will create a substantially worse health risk to its occupants as compared to a home with plenty of open windows and exceptional ventilation. That’s not saying that homes with great ventilation can’t be polluted, in reality, they certainly could be.

Since many of us spend the majority of our days inside, rather than outside, the build-up of chemicals along with other airborne pollutants can create serious health threats, resulting in numerous health conditions over time. This is specifically true when the occupants of a house happen to be older, chronically ill, or quite young, or if they currently have specific forms of respiratory disease.

The specific physical reaction depends upon the sort of contaminant. Biological pollutants may trigger allergies, while tobacco smoke along with other contaminants can result in asthma attacks or produce asthmatic problems. Mold or mildew could cause more serious health issues, and the existence of contaminants such as carbon monoxide may even bring about death if the appropriate alert system (a carbon monoxide detector) isn’t set up and completely functioning.

Healthy Living Tips

In today’s hectic world that we call home it can be simple to disregard our health and wellbeing. We’re so occupied racing through our daily lives with family, friends, jobs and social engagements that many of us don’t spend time to take care of ourselves. It’s actually no surprise that so many people are exhausted and run down. Following are some basic items that we can perform to enhance our standard of living?

Drink Plenty of H2O

You’ve heard it thousands of times and you’ll most likely hear it thousands more, make sure that you drink plenty of water!

Consider this: The body is 72 percent water. A 5 percent decline in fluids produces a 25 to 30 percent loss in power. A 15 percent decline in fluids causes loss of life! At this moment in time 66 percent of people are not taking in enough water, so over fifty percent of the population isn’t operating on all cylinders in the first place, and that’s before things such as poor air quality, poor meals and tension have their impact.

It’s really not a complicated issue to cure. Just drink a glass of water every hour, roughly 8 to 12 glasses of water each day and you’ll see a tremendous leap in your energy levels.

Nutritional Information

Little people know that heating food over 116° F destroys a great deal of the foods nutrient content. When you consider that we currently aren’t eating enough vegetables, that’s a rather substantial problem. Nutritionists recommend five servings of veggies per day. Extremely slow, for the first few weeks, walk or ride for only five minutes each day, just five minutes, no more, even though you may think you can do more.
